about the installation

ShadowBox

Through our installation prepared in collaboration between Milad Marble Dubai and Agata Kurzela studio we encourage designers and clients alike to rediscover the stone as a material by showing the wealth of surfaces based on different cuts, beyond the very few types of stone that are used commonly in projects. The idea is to treat different marble textures to hatch patterns, such as scribbles, dots, splashes, and brushstrokes — and to apply them in surprising ways, showcasing the potential of this material.

The assembly uses a combination of new and recycled marble slabs. Elements of the sculpture will be reused as wall cladding and tabletops following the exhibition.

The lighting for the installation is supplied by No Grey Area.

about the team

We met while collaborating on different projects and decided to work together on an installation for the Dubai Design Week 2020 to prove the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. Specialists in our own fields of expertise, we focused on learning from each other. Agata Kurzela studio provided concept and creative direction. Al Milad contributed expertise in stone fabrication and supply of the beautiful material: Italian Carrara, Venato, Arabescato, Marmara and Black Absolute marble. NGA conceptualised and executed the lighting for the installation

Al Milad are Natural Stone Specialists/processors who have been involved with the quarrying industry for over 3 generations.

Its founders pioneered advanced quarrying and extraction techniques in the GCC during the construction of the Bahrain causeway in the late 1970s. Al Milad General Trading Co. LLC established the GCC Natural Industry with the discovery of Marbe in Oman in 1980s and supplied iconic projects such as The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, The Royal Opera House In Oman, Signature Villas on the Palm, St Regis Hotel on Saadiyat Island over past 4 decades

Al Milad believes that Natural Stone is the sustainable surface of choice due to its low embodied energy, long life cycle and minimal use of chemical additives. Al Milad is part of of the Rocmet Corporation Group and has stockyards in Industrial Area No. 11 in Sharjah, UAE where it holds curated stocks of Italian, Omani and Spanish marble.

NGA – No Grey Area was founded in the Middle East at the end of 2014 at which time we were known as Edward Ray and specialised in linear LED and Stretch ceilings. After a huge success in the UK with these two product lines Edward Ray opened an office in Dubai to service the GCC and begin our journey utilising our extensive knowledge of both lighting and stretch ceilings.

By 2018 Edward Ray rebranded to NGA after the company had continued to grow year on year, delivering more than 300 projects in that year alone.

Expanding product ranges to include lighting – both architectural and decorative NGA were able to deliver lighting projects that covered industries such as hospitality, corporate and also residential. As we had always supported many brands with our high quality linear LED it gave us an opportunity to package both our NGA manufactured lighting with other distinguished lighting manufacturers as per the requirements of the design.

We thrive on working with the design community to ensure we bring unique and exciting projects to the market, whilst also working alongside contracting firms within the region to ensure they are delivered within budget and on time.
